Schoharie County has addressed the entire county to a city-style 9-1-1 address. This conversion will allow emergency services to better serve the community.
The Schoharie County 911 Task Force adopted the National Emergency Number Association (NENA) standards for addressing and numbering. This numbering system is based on a city-style format, with odd numbers on the left side, and even numbers on the right. All roads are generally numbered from south to north, west to east. Roads connecting to other counties may be opposite. A number was established every 53 feet, whether there was a structure or not. This will allow for growth in the future. In addition to the number, a latitude, longitude and elevation were established for each resident.
The US Postal Service, in partnership with Schoharie County, worked closely with the Task Force to make the transition as smooth as possible.
The 9-1-1 Addressing Team requested some road name changes within the county. There cannot be the same road name within zip code or emergency response area. The Team also reviewed road names in the emergency response area as well as surrounding emergency response areas and requested changes where there could be some confusion. Every attempt was made for a road to have just one name, even when it crosses Town boundaries.
In an effort for uniformity, the 9-1-1 Addressing Team also requested the Towns and Villages to take the lead in naming all Private Roads. This DOES NOT mean they will take ownership or maintenance of these roads. This is just an avenue to have one governing body review future names to avoid duplications or confusing names. The County 911 funds has purchased all signs needed for 911 Addressing.
All residents should be using their new address and Posting their numbers. This transition can cause some confusion for Emergency Responders. Residents NEED to TAKE DOWN their OLD numbers and PUT UP their NEW NUMBERS.
REMEMBER, 9-1-1 is for EMERGENCIES ONLY. Only call if you want an IMMEDIATE response of a FIRE TRUCK, AMBULANCE OR LAW ENFORCEMENT.
If you call 9-1-1 by mistake, stay on the line. Also, caution children NOT to call 9-1-1 just to see if it works, a Police Officer will respond to the scene of all hang up calls to determine if you have an emergency.
