Treasurer’s Services
Treasurer’s Delinquent Tax Collection
It is the responsibility of the County Treasurer’s Office to collect real property taxes that become delinquent. If the delinquent taxes remain unpaid for a period of four years (for residential or farm properties) or two years (for commercial properties), the office is also responsible for enforcement of foreclosure procedures as required under New York State Real Property Tax Law, Article 11.
In Schoharie County, real property tax bills are sent out according to the following schedule:
Town and County Tax Bills are sent out on January 1st of every year. They are payable to the local tax collector without penalty until January 31st. After that date, interest accrues at 1% per month. The local town tax collectors warrant expires in late May or early June, and after that date taxes must be paid to the County Treasurer’s Office because the local town tax collector will no longer be able to accept your payments.
Village Tax Bills including any re-levied water or sewer charges are sent out on June 1st of each year. These are payable to your local Village Clerk until October 31st (or when the collector’s warrant expires) and are subject to monthly interest charges. After that date, the village taxes may be paid to the Treasurer’s Office through November 30th. If the village taxes remain unpaid after November 30th, a penalty will be added and the entire amount will be re-levied (or added) to the Town and County Tax Bill which comes out in January. The Villages of Cobleskill and Schoharie use a Jan 1 – Dec 31st calendar and send out their tax bills on January 1st of each year.
School Tax Bills are sent out on September 1st. These taxes are payable to your local school tax collector during the months of September and October, or until the collector’s warrant expires. After the warrant expiration date, school taxes may be paid to the Treasurer’s Office through November 30th. If the school taxes remain unpaid after November 30th, a penalty will be added and the entire amount will be re-levied onto the next Town and County Tax Bill which comes out in January.
The Schoharie County Treasurer’s Office offers a monthly installment agreement which can make the paying of taxes easier. The taxes can be divided into 12 equal payments which is especially helpful to property owners who may be on a fixed income. Please contact our office for details.
